China's falgTibet

Tibet is a high plateau in southwest China. Tibet was an independent nation ruled by Buddhist monks until China invaded in 1951.

The people of Tibet have resisted the Chinese and have paid for their resistance with severe repression. China banned allThe Dalai Lama religious worship in Tibet and destroyed almost all Buddhist monasteries.

The Dali Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet's Buddhists, he was forced to flee to India when the Chinese invaded. On April 23, 1997, President Bill Clinton met with the Dali Lama at the White House to encourage his efforts to bring freedom to the people of Tibet.

China's falgHong Kong

Hong Kong is an island off the coast of China.  It is one of the world’s most important business centers.  Britain seized the island and controlled it for ninety-nine years, making it one of the world's most importnat business centers.  Britain returned Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997. China has allowed the island to keep its capitalist economic system, despite the fact that the rest of China is communist.
