Things you should know:

  1. Southeast Asia is also known as Indochina because it is between India and China. 
  2. Rice is the most important crop and the primary source of nutrition in Southeast Asia. 
  3. Southeast Asia is a land of many religious faiths. Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Hinduism are widely practiced. 
  4. More Muslims live in Indonesia than in any other nation. 
  5. Both the French and the Dutch once controlled much of Southeast Asia. 
  6. An archipelago is a group of islands. 
  7. The Malay Archipelago includes the nations of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Papua New Guinea.  
  8. Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei occupy Borneo, the third largest island in the world. 
  9. Singapore is a rich city-state that has enacted many strict laws against drug use and vandalism. 
  10. There is very little crime in Singapore. 
  11. About 25% of Camboda floods every year during the Monsoon season.
  12. The notorious Khmer Rouge murdered many other their countrymen in Cambodia as they attempted to force an egalitarian society. 
  13. Pol Pot was a Cambodian leader whgo was responsible for the deaths of millions of his countrymen. His Khmer Rouge forces forced people to live a rural agrarian life. 
  14. Thailand was once known as Siam. 
  15. Thailand has never been controlled by a colonial power. 
  16. The people of Myanmar, once known as Burma, continue to struggle against a repressive military government. 
  17. Ho Chi Minh led Vietnam to war against both France and America. This communist leader is considered by many Vietnamese to be the father of their nation. 
  18. Thousands of American soldiers lost their lives attempting to fight the communist government of Vietnam.
  19. Many languages are spoken in Southeast Asia.  
  20. More than 715 languages are spoken in Papua New Guinea.
