Hammurabi and his Code of Laws

What follows are lesson plans that use Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (2008). There are links to printable versions of the lesson at the bottom of the page.

Lesson Title:
Gilgamesh

Objective:
The student will discuss why law is important in society.  The student will understand the historical significance of Hammurabi’s Code as an early version of law.  The student will identify “an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth” as being associated with Hammurabi.
 
Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards:
SS.6.E.3.4
  Describe the relationship among civilizations that engage in trade, including the benefits and drawbacks of voluntary trade.

SS.6.W.1.1
  Use timelines to identify chronological order of historical events.

SS.6.W.2.4
  Compare the economic, political, social, and religious institutions of ancient river civilizations.



SS.6.W.2.7
  Summarize the important achievements of Mesopotamian civilization.

Activities:
  • Complete Mesopotamia assignment on Hammurabi
  • Identify the approximate location of Babylon on a map.
  • Volunteers will write “an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth” in pictographs on the board.
  • The class will discuss the need for the rule of law.
  • The class will work together to complete a paragraph describing the positive and negative aspects of Hammurabi’s Law.
  • Identify Hammurabi’s era on a timeline of Mesopotamia.

Materials:
  • Mesopotamia assignment on Hammurabi
  • Political Map of the Middle East that includes the modern nation of Iraq
  • Timeline
